A Great Rhythm In Life Can Help You

The rhythm life - A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play

When I was growing up there used to be an advertisement on TV that said if you had a Mars (a popular chocolate bar) a day it would help you work, rest and play! Now I’m not sure how entirely scientific that is but a client and I ended up laughing and reflecting on it the other day and that is the subject of today's BLOG.

What are your rhythms in life day to day? And can I suggest that every day that you focus on resting, working and celebrating as a great pattern for living.

Life is full of routines and habits and the habits that we put in place are very important to our long-term mental health. You see, if we are always or king, or always resting or always celebrating, life can get out of balance, and a great balance is a key to achieving great mental health.

When we allow our life to fall into a rhythm of life that brings a balance of rest, work a and celebration and can really make life hum! The other day we celebrated Thanksgiving. It was my wife’s fabulous idea to do this (we are originally Australian) but she and I have fallen in love with the idea of celebrating Thanksgiving. It has so many things about it as a holiday that are so much fun! She cooked up a huge Turkey (oh my gosh it was amazing!!!) with some help from our eldest and put on all the trimmings and we had such an amazing night! Now the previous days at work had been pretty hard. One, difficult cases and some tough decisions to be made, two, it's been the end of school for our kids this year and it's been one of the hardest years for them being locked down for 4 months and doing online learning. So the very act of celebrating was so important for us as a family! And yup it was great!

We all rested very well that night and got up and into the next day with a pretty big smile.

So my encouragement today is when you work, work hard … actually work really hard and squeeze the most out of life …. When you rest … rest well …buy that really nice pillow (shot out to Scott Pape … The Barefoot Investor) and when we celebrate .. let's celebrate all the amazing things that we have been given and have gone through this year and build that resilience with each other.

Hope this helps today.

Important note: I often notice that when clients are recovering from mental illness, such as depression or burnout or a significant change in relationship or irk they need some time off (sometimes this can be months or even years). When a client does this I encourage them that their “work” now is to focus on getting better. Rather than put themselves down that they “aren’t doing enough”. They are focusing on their job at hand, and it is very practical, is to get better. This tends to help them put into perspective the season of life they are in now and gives them a bit of hope for their future. Hope this again helps you today.
